San Bernardino, California (June 2, 2020) – San Bernardino police arrested a driver suspected of having been under the influence when his car collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Lynwood and Mountain avenues, leaving one person dead.

Toniyo Atkinson, 42, of San Bernardino, was arrested Monday, June 1, after the crash that happened the same day at about 2:14 a.m. at the San Bernardino intersection.

According to SBPD, Atkinson was driving a Chevy Tahoe when a Honda Accord ran a stop sign at the intersection and traveled into the path of his SUV. Atkinson broadsided the Accord.

The driver of the Accord, only identified as a 37-year-old San Bernardino resident, sustained fatal injuries and died.

Officers arrested Atkinson after suspecting that he may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the crash happened.

The suspect was being held at the West Valley Detention Center in place of $100,000 bail as of Monday evening.

An investigation is ongoing.
