Palo Alto, California (June 18, 2019) – A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a collision that left a woman with major injuries early Sunday morning in Palo Alto, according to a local news source.

The crash occurred just after 2:30 a.m. June 16, on southbound U.S. Highway 101.

Authorities said the accident happened when motorists were looking at the scene of another crash across the southbound lanes of the highway when a northbound Honda crashed into the rear of a BMW.

As passengers were getting out of the Honda, the vehicle was struck by a Nissan.

A 30-year-old San Jose woman who was one of the passengers in the Honda was transported to Stanford Medical Center with major injuries. A 30-year-old San Jose man and two Cupertino women in the Honda were also taken to Stanford with minor injuries. The Honda driver, a 31-year-old Union City man, sustained minor injuries.

The BMW driver, a 66-year-old man, also had minor injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, Shawn Thomas, 44, of Sunnyvale, was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of DUI.

The crash is under investigation.
