Woman Killed, Man Severely Hurt in Santa Barbara Pedestrian Accident at Figueroa Street and Chapala Street

Santa Barbara, California (October 10, 2019) – A woman was killed, a man severely hurt after a MTD Bus pedestrian crash on Wednesday afternoon at an intersection in Santa Barbara, according to a local news source.
The deadly collision happened at around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, at Figueroa Street and Chapala Street near Metropolitan Transit District busy transit center.
As per the report, a MTD bus was heading north on Chapala Street when the operator made a right turn east onto Figueroa Street. The bus drove up onto the sidewalk and hit a woman sitting on an MTD bus stop bench and a man who was by the woman’s side at the time.
The bus then came to a stop inside a city parking lot against four cars.
Woman Killed and Man Severely Injured at Figueroa Street and Chapala Street
Responding firefighters declared the woman dead due to the crash. The man was transported to the hospital for treatment of severe injuries.
At least two persons aboard the bus suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Several other persons suffered minor injuries but they rejected medical assistance.
The name of the deceased and the injured parties were not immediately released.
An investigation is underway.
Many pedestrians are hurt and several others killed in accidents in California every year. The causes of many of these pedestrian accidents include distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving and failure to observe traffic laws. It is evident that negligence on the part of motorists is the leading cause of these accidents.
