San Leandro, CA: Woman Killed, 2 Injured in I-880 Crash near Washington Avenue

San Leandro, California (February 23, 2021) – One person died, and two others were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle collision that happened Tuesday morning in San Leandro.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the I-880 crash happened at about 9:48 a.m. in the southbound lanes, just south of Washington Avenue.

As per the report, at least six vehicles, including a white Nissan van that overturned, a white Honda Civic, a silver Chevrolet Impala, a red Mazda CX5 SUV, and a white Toyota Tacoma were involved in the crash.

Deadly San Leandro Collision

Officers responded to the scene to find nine vehicles stopped within multiple traffic lanes.

An initial investigation revealed that the SUV hit the Honda and ended up on top of the Honda’s rear. There were no details about how the other vehicles were involved in the crash.

According to an Alameda County Coroner’s Office staff, who responded to the scene, the Honda’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. She was only identified as a woman in her 20s or 30s.

A passenger in the same vehicle was hospitalized with major injuries, and a victim from another vehicle was also hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries.

The pileup left three left-hand southbound lanes of the freeway closed from 10:11 a.m. to 12:55 p.m.

Authorities said speed might have been a contributing factor. Alcohol and drugs, however, are not believed to be factors.

Officers continue with an investigation into the crash.
