San Francisco, California (February 4, 2019) – Two people were killed, and nine others injured in a traffic collision that occurred Sunday morning on Highway 101 in San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP said a wrong-way driver triggered two separate collisions with the first one being reported at around 2.33 a.m. near Vermont Street.

As per the report, a driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes struck two vehicles near Vermont Street. The wrong-way driver, who was believed to have come from the Vermont Street off-ramp, did not stop after the crash.

Moments later, the hit-and-run driver crashed into a passenger van carrying six people just south of Ceaser Chavez Street. One person was ejected from their vehicle after the impact.

Both the driver of the van and the wrong-way driver died in the accident.

The five passengers in the van were hospitalized with unknown injuries. Four other people were also injured in the collision.

Five vehicles were towed away from the scene.

The crash prompted a closure of the highway from 2:40 a.m. until just before 10 a.m.

Authorities are investigating the accident.
