Every year, several traffic accidents are reported in California. Unfortunately, accidents result in many fatalities and even more injuries. The causes of these traffic accidents range from distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving and failure to observe traffic laws. It is evident that negligence on the part of motorists is the leading cause of these accidents.
Any driver involved in a traffic collision is required by law to stop and remain at the scene, especially if the crash results in injuries or fatalities, according to the California Vehicle Code 20001. A driver who flees the scene of a crash will likely be charged with a felony.
Drivers flee the scene of a collision for various reasons including DUI, lack of insurance, prior convictions, or fear of taking responsibility.
The next of kin of any victim killed as a result of a hit-and-run accident may seek compensation through the California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60.
