Piru, California (April 26, 2019) – Authorities have identified the man who was killed Thursday evening in a traffic accident in Piru.

Roberto Villalobos, 25, of Glendale, died in the accident that occurred just after 5:00 p.m. Thursday, April 25 on eastbound Highway 126, just west of Center Street.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2002 Saturn sedan driven by Villalobos, was heading eastbound on Highway 126 in the fast lane when for an unknown reason it rear-ended a Toyota Rav-4 that was also traveling in the fast lane.

The force of the impact caused both vehicles to travel out of control into the eastbound left-turn lane.  The Saturn then struck the left rear end of a semi-truck traveling in the eastbound. The Saturn flipped onto its side after the impact.

Both the Saturn and Toyota continued to spin out of control back into westbound traffic lanes, where they were hit by a Ford Ranger and a Chevrolet Silverado which were heading westbound.

Villalobos and his passenger were trapped in the overturned Saturn and were listed in critical condition. Emergency responders extricated the passenger from the vehicle and airlifted to a hospital. Villalobos was pronounced dead at the scene.

Amanda Canfield 38, of Santa Clarita, sustained minor injuries in the crash. At least two other people were transported to a hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Villalobos. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult period.  We also wish those injured a quick recovery.

The causes of these traffic accidents range from distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving and failure to observe traffic laws.
