Palm Desert, California (July 12, 2020) – The Riverside County Coroner’s office has identified the man who died in a traffic accident Saturday night at an intersection in Palm Desert as Rafael Torres, 51, of Coachella.  

The deadly crash involving two vehicles happened at around 9:00 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at the intersection of Portola Avenue and Gerald Ford Drive.    

Authorities said a 1990 Jeep, driven by Torres, was heading eastbound on Gerald Ford Drive when, for unknown reasons, it collided with a 2019 Honda that was heading northbound on Portola Avenue, driven by a 32-year-old Palm Desert woman.

Torres was ejected from his vehicle upon the impact and sustained major injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.  

The Honda’s driver, a 32-year-old Palm Desert woman, and her passenger, a 30-year-old Southgate man, were also taken to a nearby hospital with major injuries. Both were expected to survive.  

Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the crash.
