Obinna Ugorji Killed in DUI Crash on I-5 Freeway in Sacramento
Obinna Ugorji ID’d as Tow Truck Driver Killed in Sacramento Crash on Interstate 5 Freeway at Seamas Avenue
Sacramento, California (April 2, 2021) – The Sacramento County Sheriff-Coroner has identified the tow truck driver who died Saturday night following an alleged DUI crash in Sacramento as Obinna Ugorji, 40, of Sacramento.
According to a report by the California Highway Patrol, the deadly accident happened just after 11:40 p.m. Saturday, March 27, on Interstate 5 Freeway at Seamas Avenue.
The CHP said the tow truck was on the right shoulder of the northbound Interstate 5 when a Chrysler mini-van struck the tow truck and the disabled vehicle.
The tow truck driver, now identified as Ugorji, was standing on the driver’s side of the tow truck when the minivan struck him.
Ugorji was thrown onto the roadway and died at the scene.
Larry Godbold, 46, of Sacramento, the mini-van driver, was not injured and stopped at the scene. Authorities later determined that Godbold was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Godbold was ultimately arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges, including felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
