Honcut, California (February 5, 2021) – Nicole Schalles, 36, was arrested following an alleged DUI car accident that left one person dead late Thursday night at an intersection in Honcut.
The deadly crash, which was reported just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday, February 4, happened in the area of Highway 70 and Middle Honcut Road.
According to a report by the California Highway Patrol, a 2018 Volvo driven by Schalles and a 2008 Acura were traveling northbound on Highway 70 when the Volvo tried to pass the Acura. For unknown reasons, the Volvo clipped the Acura.
After the impact, the Volvo spun out and veered off the road before crashing into a perimeter fence, east of Highway 70.
The driver of the Acura reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which rotated in a counter-clockwise direction into the southbound lane of Highway 70 and came to a stop facing south. Moments later, the Acura was hit from behind by a 2000 Ford Focus that was heading southbound.
Deadly Oroville Car Accident at Highway 70 and Middle Honcut Road
The driver of the Acura, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Ford Focus sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency responders. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, authorities said.
Authorities determined that Schalles was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the accident. She was ultimately arrested and booked at the Butte County Jail on suspicion of DUI causing bodily injury and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Further details regarding the collision were not immediately available, and the accident remains under investigation.
