Nicholas Ainza Injured in Wrong-Way DUI Crash on State Route 135 in Santa Maria

Santa Maria, California (July 16, 2020) – The driver who was injured Tuesday night in an alleged DUI crash in Santa Maria has been identified as Nicholas A. Ainza, 33, of Santa Maria.  

The accident happened at around 9:42 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, on southbound State Route 135, just north of the “Y” intersection with State Route 1.  

The California Highway Patrol said Fidel Ortiz-Pausano, 26, of Santa Maria, was driving northbound in the southbound No. 1 lane when his Chevrolet Aveo collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander that was heading southbound in the No. 1 lane, driven by Ainza.    

Ainza was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.    

Ortiz-Pausano also sustained minor injuries and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was later arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, causing injury.    

No additional information about the accident was provided.    

An investigation to determine the cause of the accident is ongoing.
