Ceres, California (July 20, 2021) – Authorities have identified the woman who died after a police chase ended in a traffic collision Saturday evening in Ceres as Monica Arias, 36, of Modesto.
The incident began about 6:07 p.m. Saturday, July 17, when an officer saw a silver-coloured Volkswagen Beetle stopped at the curb at Central Avenue and Herndon Road.
The officer discovered that the driver, now identified as Arias, was in an argument with her passenger, and he turned around to check on them.
The officer recognized Arias as the suspect wanted in connection to a July 11 shooting on Bystrum Road, which the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
The officer immediately backed up behind the Volkswagen to conduct a high-risk vehicle stop. When he activated his emergency lights, Arias sped off at a high rate of speed, heading northbound on Central Avenue.
When the Volkswagen approached the intersection of Central Avenue and Hatch Road, Arias ran a red light and slammed into a semi-truck that was heading eastbound. The Volkswagen’s roof was sheared off the car in the crash.

Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and extricated Arias and the passenger from the wrecked car. Arias was pronounced dead at the scene while the passenger was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Further details about the crash were not immediately disclosed.
