Michael Liu Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 154 in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, California (June 5, 2020) – Michael Kai Liu, 31, has been identified as the Arroyo Grande man who was killed in a head-on car crash on Friday morning in Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at around 10:45 a.m. on Highway 154 and East Camino Cielo.

As per the police report, a Toyota pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 154 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the double yellow lines into the pathway of a westbound Hyundai Sonata, driven by Liu.

The two vehicles reportedly collided head-on, and the Hyundai flipped over due to the collision.

First responders arrived at the scene and extricated the Toyota driver, a 61-year-old Santa Barbara man, from the wreckage.

Liu was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Toyota driver sustained major injuries and was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment. He was later arrested on suspicion of felony DUI.

Highway 154 between Cathedral Oaks Road and Paradise Road was closed for several hours due to the accident.
