Man Killed in DUI Crash on Interstate 5 in Encinitas

Encinitas, California (March 8, 2019) – A 72-year-old Florida man was killed early Friday morning in an alleged DUI crash in Encinitas, according to a local news source.

The deadly accident took place at about 1:15 a.m. on Interstate 5 near Manchester Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the Florida man was driving a silver Hyundai Elantra when he pulled over on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 5 freeway.

For an unknown reason, a Nissan Frontier pickup truck crashed into the back of the Hyundai. The Hyundai sustained severe damage upon the impact.

Two bystanders tried to help the man in the Hyundai. One was able to reach him through the passenger side door and cut his seatbelt while the other attempted to pull him out of the wrecked Hyundai.

Firefighters along with paramedics responded to the scene and found the Hyundai drive unconscious. He was then transported to a local trauma center where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name has not been released pending identification and notification of family.

Witnesses told investigators that the driver of the pickup truck started cleaning his vehicle and throwing things away after the crash. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The crash remains under investigation.
