Madera, California (January 29, 2021) – Madera County Sheriff’s Deputy Nathaniel Cooper has been identified as the victim who sustained minor injuries following an alleged DUI collision at an intersection in Madera last week Thursday.

The traffic collision took place at Road 27 and Avenue 17 shortly before midnight.

The accident happened when Cooper responded to a call for service regarding an alleged DUI motorist on January 21.

A vehicle operated by 24-year-old Alexis Zarate Aguilar then ran a stop sign at the Madera intersection before striking the driver side of the patrol vehicle.

Deputy Cooper exited his patrol vehicle from the passenger side door and located the Aguilar’s car disabled on the highway.

Cooper sustained minor injuries following the mishap.

Aguilar, who was intoxicated at the time of the crash, attempted to escape the crash site but was arrested and taken into custody on several charges, including felony DUI, felony hit and run, and resisting arrest. 

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating to determine the cause of the accident.
