Leonard Leavitt Injured in DUI Crash on State Route 70 in Plumas
Leonard Leavitt Among 6 Hospitalized after Plumas Collision on State Route 70 near Maddalena Road

Plumas, California (July 29, 2021) – Leonard Leavitt, 69, of Maclean, Virginia, was among six people who were injured early Sunday morning in an alleged DUI crash in Plumas, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at around 12:38 a.m. Sunday, July 25, on State Route 70, just east of Maddalena Road.
The CHP said William Barnard, 22, of Reno, Nevada, was driving eastbound on State Route 70 when his 2007 Toyota 4-Runner veered into the westbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 2021 Audi driven by Leavitt.
The impact caused the Toyota to roll over multiple times and land on its wheels. The Audi came to a stop on its wheels on the south shoulder of the highway.
Leavitt and his four passengers were trapped in the wreckage and were extricated by firefighters. The paramedics then took them to Renown Medical Center in Reno with moderate injuries.
Barnard was placed under arrest on suspicion of DUI and was also taken to Renown Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
The crash prompted the authorities to temporarily close both lanes of Highway 70 while the investigation and cleanup took place.
The crash remains under investigation.
