Ceres, California (July 20, 2021) – Juan Gutierrez, 38, of Modesto, has been identified as the passenger who was injured Saturday evening after a police chase ended in a traffic accident that left a driver dead in Ceres.

The incident began about 6:07 p.m. Saturday, July 17, when an officer saw a silver-colored Volkswagen Beetle stopped at the curb at Central Avenue and Herndon Road.

The officer discovered that the driver, Monica Arias, 36, of Modesto, was in an argument with her passenger, Gutierrez, and he turned around to check on them.

The officer recognized Arias as the suspect wanted in connection to a July 11 shooting on Bystrum Road that was being investigated by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

The officer immediately backed up behind the Volkswagen to conduct a high-risk vehicle stop.

When the officer activated his emergency lights, Arias sped off at a high rate of speed northbound on Central Avenue. Arias reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of Central Avenue and Hatch Road and slammed into an eastbound semi-truck.

The Volkswagen’s roof was sheared off the car in the crash.
