Jose Pelayo Jr Among 2 Motorcyclists Seriously Hurt in New Cuyama Crash on Highway 166 near Cottonwood Canyon Road

New Cuyama, California (November 13, 2019) – Jose Alfredo Pelayo Jr, 42, was among two people seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in New Cuyama on Saturday morning, according to a local news source.

The accident happened at about 7 a.m. November 9, on Highway 166 near Cottonwood Canyon Road.

Authorities said four vehicles and two motorcycles were traveling together when one of the drivers, Juan Vega Jr., 54, pulled his 1971 Chevrolet pickup truck onto a gravel turnout. He then lost control while trying to slow down and spun into the path of a 2017 Dodge Ram truck operated by Robert Martinez-Ramos, 68.

The impact pushed the Dodge to the right and it collided with a trailer towed by a GMC pickup. The GMC was being operated by Xavier Reyes, 66.

A man riding a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle behind the vehicles tried to swerve to avoid them but ended up colliding with the Ram. The impact ejected the rider from the motorcycle.

A second rider, later identified as Pelayo, was in a 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and also swerved to avoid the crashed vehicles. He was was ejected from his motorcycle at the dirt shoulder.

Pelayo suffered a broken left thumb and broken right arm. He was transported by ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.

The other rider sustained a broken ribs, a broken left arm, and bleeding in the brain. He was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The crash is under investigation.
