Sacramento, California (May 8, 2021) – Jose Vazquez Maciel, 42, of Stockton, died last week Tuesday, two days after a motorcyclist crashed through his windshield in Sacramento.

The crash happened at about 12:10 a.m. Saturday, April 24, on Highway 99 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The CHP said a 43-year-old Modesto man was riding his Harley Davidson Road King southbound on Highway 99 when a saddle bag fell off his bike.

According to the CHP, a car struck the bag, and its contents spread across the highway. The Modesto man then pulled over and parked his motorcycle along the center divider.

The motorcyclist reportedly walked onto the roadway to go after his belongings and was struck by a Toyota Corolla.

The force of the impact pushed the motorcyclist through the windshield of the Toyota and his helmet that was still on hit the driver’s face. That accident triggered a pileup involving an SUV and the car behind the Toyota, the CHP said.

The Toyota’s driver, now identified as Maciel, sustained major injuries and was transported to a hospital. On Tuesday, his condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injuries.

The motorcyclist also suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital. The other two drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

It is still unclear if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.
