Joel Gonzalez-Garcia Arrested after DUI Crash that Killed 2 in Prunedale

Prunedale, California (September 28, 2020) – Joel Gonzalez-Garcia, 21, of Watsonville, was arrested after a traffic accident that killed two people and left five others injured in Prunedale Saturday night, authorities said.

The deadly crash happened just after 10:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, on San Miguel Canyon Road near Mark Ryan Estates.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Garcia was driving a Chevy truck on San Miguel Canyon Road when, for an unknown reason, he allowed the vehicle to cross over the double yellow lines into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Nissan car.

Deadly Prunedale Head-On Crash on San Miguel Canyon Road

The driver and the passenger of the Nissan were declared deceased at the scene. The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their next of kin.

Garcia and his four passengers, believed to be 19-24 years, were transported to Natividad Medical Center with moderate to major injuries.

Authorities determined that Garcia was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. He was eventually arrested for DUI.

The crash remains under investigation.
