Joe Shami Killed in Lafayette Bicycle Accident at Pleasant Hill Road and Olympic Boulevard
Joe Shami ID’d as Bicyclist Hit and Killed by Vehicle at Pleasant Hill Road and Olympic Boulevard in Lafayette
Lafayette, California (April 15, 2021) – The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has identified the bicyclist who died after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning in Lafayette as Joe Shami, 86.
Police said the accident happened at about 6:48 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and Olympic Boulevard roundabout.
According to the authorities, Shami was in the roundabout intersection when, for unknown reasons, he was hit by an SUV.
An off-duty nurse stopped at the scene and offered first aid treatment to Shami until emergency personnel arrived. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the involved vehicle stopped at the scene and was cooperative, police said. No arrest was made.
Police closed a section of the roundabout following the crash.
