Joan Gately Suffers Major Injuries in Canyon Crash on Highway 70 near Quarry Road

Canyon, California (December 18, 2020) – Joan Gately, 63, of Quincy has been identified as the woman who was seriously injured following a traffic accident that happened Wednesday in Canyon.
The major injury collision took place on Highway 70, just east of Quarry Road, on Wednesday, December 16, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said a 2019 Kenworth hauling a 2004 box trailer loaded with packages and a 2008 box trailer half loaded with parcels was heading eastbound on Highway 70 at an estimated speed in excess of 45 mph. At the same time, a 2001 Peterbilt tractor pulling two 1990 flatbed trailers loaded with lumber was also traveling eastbound at a posted speed of 45 mph behind the Kenworth.
A 2018 Rav-4, driven by Gately, was heading westbound on Highway 70 towards Quarry Road at an estimated speed of 50-55 mph.
According to the CHP, the Kenworth was traveling at an unsafe speed and the driver applied the brakes of the semi while entering a sharp right-hand curve in the roadway. The trailer tires of the rear trailer locked up as the trailer left the eastbound lane and entered the westbound lane.
The left rear corner of the Kenworth collided with the left-back door and quarter panel of the Rav-4. The force of the impact pushed the Rav-4 into the westbound lane, where it collided head-on with the Peterbilt.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and extricated Gately from the wrecked Rav-4. She was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center with major injuries.
The driver of the Kenworth, Maria Thunder, 47, of Reno, and the Peterbilt driver, Todd Duckworth, 48, of Orland, were not injured.
The accident remains under investigation.
