Gustine, California (April 28, 2020) – The man who was killed in a two-vehicle collision last Tuesday near Gustine has been identified by the Merced County Coroner’s Office as Jesus Hernandez, 25, of San Jose.

The wreck happened just before 4:30 p.m. April 21, on State Route 33 and Sullivan Road.

According to CHP, a 1996 Acura driven by Lisa Chavez, 23, of San Jose was traveling northbound on Highway 33 when she tried to make a left turn and collided with an oncoming 2017 Nissan driven by Luis Cruz, 25, of Santa Nella.

Hernandez, who was a passenger in the Acura, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cruz sustained minor injuries and declined medical aid.

Chavez was taken to Los Banos Memorial Hospital with a complaint of pain.

Authorities said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

The collision is under investigation.
