Jerry Claborn Hurt in Fatal Tulare County Crash at Westwood Street and Avenue 178
Tulare County, California (June 18, 2019) – A 56-year-old Porterville woman was killed and two other people were injured Monday afternoon in a head-on collision in Tulare County, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Just before 4:00 p.m. Monday, June 17, the CHP officers received a report regarding a three-car crash at the intersection of Westwood Street and Avenue 178, between Porterville and Strathmore.
According to the CHP, a 40-year-old Strathmore woman was driving northbound on Westwood Street when for an undetermined reason, she allowed her Chevrolet Silverado pickup to drift off the east road edge of Westwood Street.
The Chevrolet then over-corrected to the west and crossed into southbound traffic, where it collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla sedan driven by a 56-year-old Porterville woman.
The force of the impact caused the Chevrolet to collide with a Jeep Cherokee driven by Jerry Claborn, 76 of Porterville. The Toyota careened across the roadway and slammed into an olive tree.
Jerry Claborn and his passenger, Judith Claborn, 72 of Porterville, were transported to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Toyota, who has not been identified pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Kaweah Delta Medical Center with major injuries.
It was immediately unclear if the drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Roads were closed at Westwood and avenues 178 and 182 as the officers investigated the cause of the accident. Alcohol or drugs were not considered factors in the collision.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
