Man Killed, Another Injured in SR 20 Car Collision in Deception Pass
Deception Pass, Washington (January 4, 2020) – A driver died, and a passenger was hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision that took place early Friday morning in Deception Pass in Skagit County, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The crash occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on State Route 20 and Deception Pass Road.
Authorities said the crash involved a 2005 Chevy Cobalt and a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the Chevy, Jaushon A. Claygarner, 19, of Oak Harbor, was traveling north on SR-20 when he crossed the center line and hit the passenger side of the southbound Jeep.
Claygarner was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was the only occupant in his car.
A passenger in the Jeep, identified as a 24-year-old resident of Loudonville, N.Y., was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The driver of the Jeep was not injured.
The highway remained closed for hours as emergency crews investigated and cleared the scene.
