James Rowland Killed in Humboldt Crash on State Route 255
James Rowland among Two Victims of Fatal Car Accident on State Route 255 near Samoa Bridges in Humboldt

Humboldt, California (August 7, 2020) – James Rowland, 42, of Arcata, was among two people who were killed early Wednesday morning in a traffic collision in the Humboldt area.
According to California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash was reported at around 2:30 a.m.Wednesday, August 5, on State Route 255 near the third span of Samoa Bridges.
The CHP said William Bryant Montgomery, 52, of Eureka, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on State Route 255 when, for unknown reasons, he allowed the vehicle to drift off the road and crashed into the water on the east side of the bridge.
As a result of the crash, the Malibu became submerged in the water.
First responders arrived at the scene and found Montgomery and Rowland in the submerged vehicle. The crews performed life-saving measures for both victims.
The two occupants of the Malibu were then taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
It is undetermined whether alcohol or drugs were suspected factors in the accident.
