San Leandro, California (January 11, 2021) – Authorities have identified the Good Samaritan who died in a multi-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in San Leandro as Guadalupe Romero, 39, of East Bay.

The deadly accident happened at about 1:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9 on southbound Interstate 880 near the Floresta Boulevard overpass, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to the CHP, a vehicle was traveling northbound on Interstate 880 when, for unknown reasons, it crashed into the rear of another vehicle.

The vehicle that was rear-ended overturned after the impact. Two people were ejected from their vehicles as a result of the collision, the CHP said.

Shortly after the initial crash, Romero stopped and got out of his vehicle to help the victims but was hit by another vehicle.

Romero was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six other people, including the ejected parties, were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley and Highland Hospital in Oakland with moderate to severe injuries. Their current conditions were not disclosed.

The driver of the first vehicle was ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI, but the driver of the second vehicle was not at the crash site.

Details about the driver who struck Romero was not immediately available.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
