Gilberto Avila Killed in Whitewater Pedestrian Crash on Interstate 10 and Whitewater Road

Whitewater, California (March 13, 2020) – A man was fatally hit by a vehicle on Thursday afternoon in Whitewater, according to the CHP.
The crash happened at around 3 p.m. March 12, on Interstate 10 and Whitewater Road.
According to the report, Gilberto Avila, 40, of Yucca Valley was driving a Prius when he was involved in a minor collision. An officer responded to the incident and requested for a tow truck to tow the Prius from the scene.
As the Prius was being loaded to the tow truck, a silver Chrysler Sebring traveling eastbound on I-10 lost control and drifted into the shoulder, hitting the tow truck and Avila.

Avila was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The driver and two passengers in the Chrysler were hospitalized with minor injuries.
Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors in the accident. The driver of the Chrysler, an Arizona man, was reportedly traveling at an unsafe speed for the road/weather conditions.
The incident is under investigation.
