Taft, California (May 31, 2020) – Authorities are investigating a Thursday evening DUI accident that left a woman seriously injured in Taft.

The major injury crash occurred at about 5:30 p.m., on May 28, at Wood Street and Lierly Avenue.

The California Highway Patrol said a Ford, operated by Yvette Herrera, 21, of Taft, was traveling eastbound on Wood Street when it collided with a Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Eulogio Lopez Torres, 21.

The Chevrolet was reportedly driving southbound on Lierly Avenue when it allegedly ran a stop sign at Wood Street and smashed into Herrera’s Ford. 

Following the accident, the two vehicles drifted into the front yard of a home in the 500 block of Lierly Avenue. 

Herrera’s Ford became wedged against the front porch of the house. The first responders extricated Herrera who was trapped inside the wreckage.

Herrera suffered injuries, including a possible broken pelvis and a fractured femur and was airlifted to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

Two juvenile passengers in Torres’s car were uninjured in the accident.

Torres fled the scene on foot and was later arrested near South Tenth and Crystal streets on suspicion of felony DUI and felony hit-and-run causing injury. Torres was being held at the Sheriff’s central with a bail set at $40,000.

Torres had initially run the stop sign at Crystal Street.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
