Merced, California (April 12, 2021) –A  man was arrested following an early Thursday morning hit-and-run crash that left an elderly pedestrian seriously injured at an intersection in Merced, authorities said.

The major injury accident was reported at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8, in the area of 16th and H Streets.

According to the authorities, a 75-year-old man using a walker was traveling down the street on foot when a vehicle hit him.

First responders arrived at the scene and found the man lying in the gutter near O Street with major injuries. He was transported to a hospital in Modesto for treatment.

The driver of the involved vehicle did not stop to render aid to the victim and fled the scene. On Friday, April 9, authorities located a yellow Ford Mustang believed to have been involved in the hit-and-run accident at a residence in Merced.

Christian Cortez was eventually arrested and booked into Merced County Jail for felony hit-and-run after he admitted to having been involved in the accident.
