Driver Described as “Driving Recklessly” in Fatal Highway 46 Crash May have had Medical Emergency
Tyler Burk, Killed in Auburn Car Collision on Highway 49, may have had Medical Event
Auburn, California (December 6, 2019) – The Placer County sheriff’s and coroner’s officials released the name of the driver who was killed Wednesday in a multi-vehicle collision in Auburn, a local news source reported.
The driver was 21-year-old Tyler William Burk, of Auburn.
The California Highway Patrol had earlier said that Burk was driving recklessly and at very high speeds before the crash. The coroner’s office now says Burk may have experienced a medical event prior to the accident.
The accident took place at about 1 p.m. on Highway 49 near Cramer Road.
The collision involved three vehicles including a 2013 Volkswagen Golf.
Authorities said Burk was traveling northbound in the Volkswagen at a very high rate of speed in the center turning lane for both northbound and southbound traffic. The driver suddenly swerved into the southbound lanes of the highway and struck the left rear corner of a Ford F150 pickup truck. The force caused the Volkswagen to swerve into the path of an Acura RDX.
Burk was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel. The driver of the Acura, a 73-year-old Grass Valley man, was hospitalized with major injuries. The driver of the Ford was not hurt.
All the drivers were wearing their safety belts.
CHP Auburn office is investigating the accident.
