Calaveras County, California (April 20, 2021) – Dominic Appleby, 21, of Merced, was among three people who were injured Saturday morning in an alleged DUI crash in Calaveras County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at around 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 17, on Highway 4, just west of Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

According to the CHP, Brooke Buchanan, 21, of Merced, was driving a 2006 Honda Civic westbound on Highway 4 when, for unknown reasons, the Honda drifted across the center median into the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with an oncoming 2004 Ford F-250, operated by Thomas Sullivan, 61, of Dorrington.

Major Injury DUI Crash on Highway 4 in Calaveras County

Buchanan sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment before being booked into jail on suspicion of DUI causing injury.

Appleby, who was a passenger in Buchanan’s vehicle, was taken via a ground ambulance to Adventist Health Sonora for treatment of moderate injuries.

Sullivan was also transported to Adventist Health Sonora with minor injuries.

The CHP said Buchanan and Appleby were not wearing their seatbelts when the accident occurred.

The crash remains under investigation.
