Diego Mateo Killed in Escondido Bicycle Accident at Ninth Avenue and Spruce Street

Escondido, California (March 30, 2021) – The San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the bicyclist who died after being struck by a vehicle Friday night at an intersection in Escondido as Diego Mateo, 33, of Escondido.

The deadly accident occurred at about 7:04 p.m. Friday, March 26, at the intersection of West Ninth Avenue and South Spruce Street.

Authorities said Mateo was riding his bicycle on Ninth Avenue when he was hit by a 2009 Nissan Altima sedan that was heading westbound on Ninth Avenue.

Due to the impact, Mateo was thrown off his bike and landed on the street.

Deadly Escondido Bicycle Accident at Ninth Avenue and Spruce Street

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and took Mateo to Palomar Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at 7:33 p.m.

The female driver of the Nissan stopped at the scene after the accident.

No other details about the crash were immediately available.

The Escondido Police is investigating the crash.
