Escondido, California (July 9, 2019) – A deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff was hospitalized Sunday night after a traffic accident in Escondido, authorities said.

The wreck happened at about 10:44 p.m. Sunday, July 7 on Interstate 5.

According to the authorities, a Nissan Pathfinder was heading northbound on Center City Parkway near Jesmond Dene Road without lights on.

Deputy S. Hurd saw the Nissan and attempted to pull the vehicle over for a traffic stop at Champagne Boulevard near Mountain Meadow Road. The Nissan driver stopped briefly and then took off, traveling northbound on Champagne Boulevard at speeds up to 90 miles per hour.

The suspect vehicle then turned west on Gopher Canyon Road and entered on Interstate 5 Freeway traveling southbound. The Nissan driver made a U-turn from the far left lane to head northbound in the southbound lane. The Nissan reportedly struck the rear passenger’s door in the rear of the patrol vehicle.

Hurd was transported to Palomar Hospital with minor injuries.

The Nissan was found at the Lawrence Welk Resort in the 8800 block of Lawrence Welk Drive. The suspect was transported into custody, but the driver was not found.

The crash remains under investigation.
