Sutter County, California (October 19, 2019) – A California Highway Patrol officer was struck and critically injured by an alleged drunk driver while directing traffic Saturday morning north of Yuba City, Sutter County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened at around 1:18 a.m. on Highway 99 at the Lomo Crossing.
According to the CHP, the officer was directing traffic at the Lomo Crossing due to railroad arms that were stuck in the down position.
The CHP said the suspect, identified as Chico State student Lucas Julian Nelson,21, was driving a grey SUV at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop for the railroad crossing sign and hit a 15-year CHP veteran.
The officer was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
Nelson tried to flee the scene, but the injured officer’s partner ran after him. He was arrested and booked into the Sutter County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence .
Butte County records show that Nelson previously received a speeding ticket in July and was charged in 2017 with being a minor in possession of alcohol in public, although that case was dismissed.
The crash remains under investigation.
