Driver Killed, CHP Officer Injured in Castaic Crash on 5 Freeway near Templin Highway

Castaic, California (January 5, 2021) – Authorities are investigating a Monday afternoon traffic accident that killed one person and left a California Highway Patrol officer injured in Castaic.
The deadly accident happened at about 12:40 p.m., on January 4, on the northbound side of 5 Freeway north of Templin Highway.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a fully loaded truck veered off the freeway and went off an embankment about 80 feet.
The responding CHP officer conducted CPR before paramedics arrived and possibly suffered heat exhaustion.

Sadly, the driver of the big rig was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver allegedly suffered some sort of medical condition before the accident.
The CHP officer was flown to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.
Traffic on the right two lanes of the freeway was stopped for an unknown period due to the accident.
An investigation into the collision is underway.
