Costa Mesa, California (December 8, 2020) – Authorities have released the name of the 12-year-old Costa Mesa boy who died following an alleged DUI bicycle accident at an intersection in Costa Mesa Sunday evening.

The Costa Mesa police responded to the deadly crash site shortly before 5:55 p.m., December 6, at Junipero and Arlington drives.

Noel Bascon was riding a bicycle along with his father when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 59-year-old Richard Lavalle east on Arlington Drive.

Bascon was attempting to cross the street in a crosswalk before he was hit by Lavalle, who failed to stop for a stop sign.

Meanwhile, Bascon was thrown several feet into the air upon the impact.

Noel Bascon Fatal Costa Mesa Crash Sunday Evening

Bascon died at the hospital while undergoing treatment.

Lavalle, a Long Beach resident, was later arrested on suspicion of murder, DUI, and a parole violation. 

An Artesia resident, 56-year-old Lee Anna Diaz Murphy, was also detained for possession of controlled substances and unlawful paraphernalia.

Murphy was riding as a passenger in the involved automobile.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
