Winton, California (November 30, 2020) – A 33-year-old Atwater man was killed in a Sunday night alleged DUI crash that left two other people seriously injured near Winton in Merced County, the CHP said.

The deadly head-on crash happened at about 9:00 p.m., on November 29, at Walnut Avenue and Central Avenue.

A 2008 Lexus IS 350, driven by Jose Marin Guizar Jr., 23, of Winton, was headed eastbound on Walnut Avenue approaching Central Avenue when it lost control and crossed into the oncoming traffic lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Unfortunately, the Lexus reportedly collided head-on with a 2001 Honda Civic, driven by the Atwater man. The Honda was traveling westbound on Walnut Avenue, west of Central Avenue at the time.

As a result of the crash impact, the Honda’s engine compartment caught fire. The occupants of the Honda were also trapped inside, the officials said.

Passersby were reportedly able to pull the Honda’s right-front passenger, Candice McCarty, 34, of Winton, while Guizar was freed by the fire personnel who responded to the crash.
