Maricopa, California (August 17, 2020) – Two people were injured in a car accident that occurred near Maricopa in Kern County on Monday morning.

The accident happened on Highway 166 at about 1:25 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The authorities said 19-year-old Anahi Paniagua, of Buckeye, Arizona, was driving a 1998 Nissan Maxima eastbound on the highway when she lost control for unknown reasons.

The vehicle traveled off the roadway and crashed into a barbed wire before it overturned.

2 Injured in Car Accident on Highway 166 in Kern County

Paniagua was seriously injured in the accident and was flown to Kern Medical for treatment.

A passenger in the vehicle, 20-year-old Shawn Santos, of Bakersfield, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

No additional information about the accident was provided.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
