Dean Bednarczyk Arrested after Interstate 5 Crash near San Elijo Lagoon That Killed Florida Man

Encinitas, California (March 9, 2019) – The suspected drunk driver who caused a traffic accident that left a 72-year-old Florida man dead early Friday morning in Encinitas has been arrested, according to a local news source.
The deadly accident took place at about 1:15 a.m. Friday, March 8 on Interstate 5 near San Elijo Lagoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the suspect, Dean Bednarczyk, 42, of Oceanside, was driving a 2008 Nissan Frontier pickup when his vehicle veered off the northbound side of the freeway and crashed into a 2018 Hyundai Elantra sedan that was parked on the right-hand shoulder near Manchester Avenue.
The Florida man, who was the driver of the Hyundai, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital center where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name has not been released pending identification and notification of family.
Bednarczyk sustained fractured ribs and other injuries and was taken to the San Diego trauma center. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
The crash remains under investigation.
