1 Killed, Kevin Vargas Arrested after Whittier Accident on Newlin Avenue and Wardman Street

Whittier, California (February 19, 2019) – Police arrested a suspect after a police pursuit ended in a crash that left an innocent driver dead on Monday morning in Uptown Whittier.
According to the Whittier Police Department, the incident took place at about 11:00 a.m. February 18, on Newlin Avenue and Wardman Street.
Authorities said officers spotted an alleged incident of road rage and attempted to pull over the driver involved in the area of Whittier Boulevard and Greenleaf Avenue. The driver, identified as Kevin Vargas, 34, of Santa Fe Springs, failed to stop, initiating a chase through the streets of Uptown Whittier.
The pursuit came to an end when Vargas struck another vehicle at Newline Avenue and Wardman Street. The impact caused the suspect’s car to catch fire.
Vargas jumped out of the burning car and tried to escape, but the police caught him. He was detained at the hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the vehicle struck by Vargas succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The victim’s identity was not immediately released.
Police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
