San Francisco, CA: Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 101 Freeway

San Francisco, California (February 3, 2019) – Two people were killed and nine others were injured early Sunday morning in a wrong-way car crash in San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol said.

The deadly accident was reported at around 2:33 a.m. on Highway 101 Freeway near Vermont Street.

According to the CHP, a wrong-way driver was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 101 Freeway when their vehicle collided with two vehicles. Authorities said the wrong-way vehicle was believed to have come from the Vermont Street off-ramp.

The wrong-way driver then hit another vehicle that traveling northbound on Highway 101 Freeway, just south of Cesar Chavez Street. One person was ejected from a vehicle due to the force of the impact. That person died at the scene.

The wrong-way driver was also killed in the accident. Nine other people sustained unspecified injuries.

It was immediately unclear if the person that was ejected was riding in the wrong-way vehicle or the vehicle traveling in the northbound direction.

The names of the deceased and injured victims have not been disclosed.

As of 2:40 a.m. all lanes of the northbound Highway 101 freeway were shut down as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
