Sacramento, California (July 26, 2021) – The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has identified the bicyclist who died after being struck by a suspected drunken driver last month in Sacramento as Michael Dodson, 76, of Sacramento.

The accident occurred at about 9:10 a.m. on June 29 on the American River Parkway near the 1700 block of Tribute Road.

A vehicle reportedly drove through the trail gates and entered the bike path just off of Tribute Road. The car then rammed into a group of cyclists.

Bicyclist Dies after Sacramento Crash on American River Parkway

Dodson, who was one of the bicyclists, was transported to a hospital in critical condition. On July 23, his condition deteriorated, and he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, Armando Moreno-Rodriguez, 25, stopped at the scene and cooperated with the police. Authorities later determined that Moreno-Rodriguez was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

Moreno-Rodriguez was ultimately arrested and booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of DUI.

The Sacramento Police Department Major Collisions Investigations Unit is investigating the crash.
