Merced County, California (July 14, 2021) – Authorities have arrested 64-year-old Michael Harris of Santa Paula following an alleged hit-and-run fatal bicycle accident that occurred in Merced County Monday night.

The deadly crash was reported just before 8:00 p.m. at Utah Street and Bellevue Road, near El Capitan High School.

As per the California Highway Patrol report, a 22-year-old party was riding a bicycle westbound on Bellevue Road when he was rear-ended by a 2016 Buick Regal operated by Harris on July 12.

Sadly, the unidentified bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Michael did not stop to render aid to the rider and escaped the scene southbound on Utah Street. He later called 911 around 11:30 p.m. from his home in Kern County near Bakersfield, reporting that he had been in the accident.

Harris was apprehended by Merced CHP officers and returned to Merced, where he was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of criminal homicide, driving a vehicle with gross negligence, and hit-and-run resulting in death or injury.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
