Alameda County, California (July 8, 2021) – Authorities have identified the man who died early Thursday morning following an alleged DUI crash in Alameda County as James R. Venenciano, 70, of Fremont.

The tragic wreck happened at around 12:07 a.m. on Interstate 880, just south of the Aladdin Avenue overcrossing, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to the CHP, an Acura MDX, driven by Venenciano, was heading southbound on Interstate 880 when, for undetermined reasons, the Acura collided with a semi-truck that was traveling in the lane closest to the shoulder.

After the impact, the Acura went back across the traffic lanes and crashed into the concrete center median before coming to rest in the lane closest to the median.

The CHP said a Nissan traveling the lane swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision but ended up colliding with the Acura.

Man Killed Interstate 880 Collision in Alameda County Identified

Venenciano was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 5:20 a.m.

Both drivers of the Nissan and the truck were not injured.

Authorities later determined that the male driver of the Nissan was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of DUI.

No further details about the crash were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
