Escondido, California (June 9, 2021) – A San Diego man died Wednesday evening when a sedan he was driving crashed into the back of an SUV in Escondido, authorities said.

The crash happened just after 6:00 p.m. in the northbound lane of Interstate 15 near Valley Parkway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the 89-year-old San Diego man was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla northbound on Interstate 15 when he rear-ended a 2021 Cadillac Escalade, driven by a 58-year-old Bay Area man.

Interstate 15 Crash in Escondido Kills Elderly Man

Medical personnel responded to the scene and found the driver of the Corolla unresponsive. The elderly driver was then taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the elderly man might have suffered a medical emergency prior to the collision. His name has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Cadillac and his passenger, a 17-year-old girl, were not injured in the crash.

It is still unclear whether the deceased person died due to the injuries suffered in the crash or the medical issue. Three lanes of the freeway were closed for nearly 20 minutes during the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.
