Bakersfield, California (March 30, 2021) – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who died Sunday night following a traffic accident involving three vehicles in southwest Bakersfield as Jose Luis Cardenas Alvarado, 78, of Arvin.

The deadly collision happened at about 8:12 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at the intersection of Weedpatch Highway and Wilson Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Chevrolet S-10, driven by Alvarado, was stopped westbound on Wilson Road and was attempting to make a left turn at the intersection when it collided with a 2007 Peterbilt semi-truck that was traveling northbound on Weedpatch Highway.

After the impact, the tractor-trailer drifted across the center median and collided with an oncoming 2003 Chevrolet Suburban.

Alvarado, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The driver of the Suburban sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. Two passengers of the Suburban, including a 5-year-old girl, were also taken to the hospital with major injuries.

The semi-truck driver sustained minor injuries but declined transportation to the hospital.

No additional information about the accident was provided.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
