Rick Navarro ID’d as Driver Killed in Empire Train Accident near Yosemite and Santa Fe Avenues

Empire, California (March 11, 2021) – The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who died after a train struck his vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Empire as Rick Navarro, 60, of Modesto.
The deadly accident happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, near the intersection of Yosemite and Santa Fe Avenues.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Navarro was driving a silver 2003 GMC Yukon westbound on Yosemite Avenue when he went under railroad crossing arms.
The Yukon then stopped in the middle of the railroad tracks and was hit by the northbound train.
Navarro, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle upon the impact. He was transported to Memorial Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
It was unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
