Daniel Barrera ID’d as Man Killed in Fresno Car Crash at Church and Sunnyside Avenues
Fresno, California (March 5, 2021) – Authorities have identified the man who died in an alleged DUI car accident that also left his young son injured Sunday morning at an intersection in Fresno as Daniel Barrera, 34, of Sanger.
The deadly accident occurred at around 6:00 a.m. Sunday, February 28, at the intersection of Church and Sunnyside avenues.
Police said a BMW was heading southbound on Sunnyside Avenue when the driver allegedly ran a red light and crashed into the driver’s side of a Chevy truck that was traveling eastbound on Church Avenue.
The impact of the collision caused the BMW to slam into a residential brick wall near the southeast corner of the Fresno intersection.
The Chevy came to rest on the northbound side of Sunnyside Avenue as a result of the accident.

Barrera, who was the driver of the Chevy, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Emergency personnel also took his 8-year-old son to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The BMW driver, identified as Miguel Angel Escamilla, 24, of Fresno, fled the scene on foot but was later arrested. He was eventually booked into Fresno County Jail on suspicion of DUI while causing death or injury, hit and run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The accident remains under investigation.
