Clarence Canaan ID’d as Man Killed in Bakersfield Motorcycle Crash on Highway 65 at Merced Avenue

Bakersfield, California (November 20, 2020) – Authorities have identified the motorcyclist who died in a traffic collision involving a big rig Friday afternoon at an intersection in Bakersfield as Clarence Cabitt Canaan, 66, of Bakersfield.
The deadly crash occurred at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday, November 14, on Highway 65 at Merced Avenue.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Canaan was riding his Yamaha northbound on Highway 65 and was approaching a semi-truck heading southbound when he attempted to pass an uninvolved vehicle within the center of the highway.
For unknown reasons, the passing semi-truck hit the motorcycle.
The force of the impact caused Canaan to be ejected onto the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both lanes of State Route 65 were closed at Merced Avenue while the investigation and cleanup took place. It is undetermined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
